SWAT & negotiations

Special Weapons and Tactics Team

This is a joint team between our Sheriff's Office and the Helena Police Department.

They are trained to tackle situations beyond the capability of conventional police forces. SWAT teams are called in when an incident presents significant risk to law enforcement officers or the public.  You must have at least one year of experience with the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Reserve, or Helena Police Department.  Candidates will need to successfully complete an oral interview with the SWAT Team membership, the physical fitness test at the 60th percentile, and the firearms qualification course.  Members are also required to complete Primary SWAT at MLEA.

Crisis/ Hostage Negotiations tEam

To provide an emergency response to emergency situations involving persons in crisis, barricaded subjects (with and without hostages), and other incidents in which a high level of skill is necessary to communicate with a person or groups of people to bring a peaceful resolution to a situation. This is usually coupled with a SWAT response to an incident, although negotiators may be conducting negotiations without SWAT being called out or responding to a scene.

Deputies who want to join must have one year of experience as a full-time deputy with the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff’s Office and successful completion of his/her probationary period. Crisis/Hostage Negotiations Team members may not be active SWAT members.
