Civilian Job Opportunities

The Sheriff's Office is made up of numerous job opportunities in the civilian sector.  Do you want to support your local law enforcement but maybe behind the scenes?  Deputies and detention officers could not do their jobs thoroughly without the support of civilian staff members.

Support staff

Administrative Secretary 
The administrative secretary performs a wide variety of duties to include scheduling events and meetings, job assignment postings, social media postings, clerical work for all divisions, and much more.  

Senior Finance Coordinator ​
Performs grant management, budgeting, accounting, payroll, inmate fund management, and supervises accounting technician and MRDTF administrative assistant.

Accounting Technician
Under general direction of the Finance Coordinator, this position will perform a variety of accounting and administrative duties utilizing various accounting systems including the county finance system, computer spreadsheets, and other computer software. Receives cash, makes deposits, reconciles and prepares monthly balance reports for various funds, trust accounts and grants.

MRDTF Administrative Assistant
Under the general supervision of the Finance Coordinator, this position will help local MRDTF (Missouri River Drug Task Force) Agents in coordinating with the County Attorney’s office, the Montana Attorney General’s Office and the U. S. Attorney’s Office in accounting for the disbursements and receipts of MRDTF grant funds, processing grant request forms, drafting search warrant applications and warrants and various affidavits supporting the agents’ requests for warrants and orders.

Animal Control Officer
The job covers all aspects of the animal world, dealing with domestic animals, livestock, reptiles, and wildlife. One of the most difficult and heart-breaking aspects of the job is picking up deceased animals from roadways and dealing with cruelty situations. However, the rewards of helping animals are what make the job worthwhile. 
​
Civil Secretary
Under the direct supervision of the sheriff’s office civil sergeant, performs administrative support and receptionist duties, as well as the processing and renewal of concealed weapons permits.

Civil Paralegal
Under general supervision of the Civil Sergeant, this position processes civil documents ensuring they meet legal requirements for service, prepares accounting and legal documents for processing, maintains files, and answers questions pertaining to service of civil processing documents.   

​Evidence Technician
Performs intake, cataloging, storage, and release of evidentiary items; maintains and operates the Property/Evidence Room; assumes responsibility for receiving, cataloging, storing, releasing and destroying physical evidence according to established procedures.

Civilian Deputy Coroner
Deputy Coroners must posses certain qualities to be effective, and are expected to be proficient in many areas before being permanently appointed to the position of Deputy Coroner.

Public Safety/ Communications System Manager
The communications systems manager's job is to install, maintain and upgrade communications systems infrastructure for not only the Sheriff’s office, but for all first responder agencies in Lewis and Clark County, as well as the State of Montana.  Our system is fairly complex, and the duties include managing and maintaining all of the core servers, routers, switches and virtual components of the statewide radio system, as well as the physical infrastructure in Lewis and Clark county.  This includes nine trunked radio sites, towers, antennas, and generators as well as four conventional radio sites, three with solar power only. 
 
Radio Technician
The job here has several facets.   Technicians do their very best to find grant funding in an attempt to ease the burden on the budget and that includes grant writing, applications and reporting for awards.  This is a big part of how they can keep up with the ever-changing technologies.  They also do their own work internally 90% of the time.  This includes wiring, configuration, high tower work, and all of the challenges that come along with this sort of endeavor.  This also includes use of ATVs, snowmobiles, snow cats, helicopters and 4X4 pickup trucks as well as safety equipment and training in things like tower climbing and tower rescue.

Jail Medical RN
Under the direct supervision of the Detention Center Captain, this position provides nursing services to the inmates of the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center and coordinates a program of inoculations for staff of the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office. This is a civilian, non-sworn position.​

Jail Medical Physician


​Sobriety Compliance Coordinator
Under general direction of the Detention Captain, this position coordinates the daily functions of the sobriety compliance program.
