The Detention Center

The fundamental job of the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center is safety and security.  With inmates under our care, we are responsible for their well-being and managing their behavior.  Day-to-day duties include: meals, medication, recreation, clothing change, court and one of the most important parts of the job is one-on-one communications with the inmates.  Once a facility assumes custody of a prisoner, that facility is responsible for providing care to the inmates by abiding by the constitution.

Detention officers

They spend four weeks attending the Corrections/Detention Officer Basic class at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy.  Along with that, they will be put into a Field Training Program that includes training on:  Policy and Procedure, Inmate Rights, Code of Ethics, Suicide Prevention, Use of Force, Report Writing, Safety and Security, Emergency Plans, Communication and CPR/First Aid.
 Many of our full time deputies and retired personnel began their career inside the Detention Center.  Here they learned how our core values: Professionalism, Accountability, Loyalty, Courage, Compassion, Integrity and Dedication fit into this profession.  They learned skills necessary to help them succeed and advance in rank inside the detention center and out on the streets as sworn patrol deputies.

 Detention Transport officers

Primary responsibility is transporting inmates to the Lewis & Clark County Detention Center from anywhere in the state on our warrants issued by Lewis & Clark County Justice and District court.
We transport inmates to proper facilities after sentencing, like prison.  This position is also responsible for taking inmates to medical and dental appointments and to the hospital.  We also take mentally ill inmates and persons to the Warm Springs State Hospital.
When not on transports, these officer performs duties as Detention Officers and fill in where needed in the Detention Center.

Sobriety Compliance Programs

They coordinate with Justice Court, Lewis & Clark County District Courts, Municipal Court, and Probation and Parole, by enrolling all individuals court-ordered to participate in the 24/7 program. They work with and submit 24/7 violations to sworn officers, prosecutors, and courts; schedule evening and weekend staffing coverage for the 24/7 program; engage and maintain professional relationships with courts, prosecutors, law enforcement, other counties, and representatives from Intoximeters; and budget, order and maintain accountability over operating supplies, money handling and control, and various computer programs.
​This assignment is also expected to coordinate and oversee other alternative programs, such as but not limited to Home Arrest, SCRAM, PBT Facial Recognition, and GPS Units.  Other expectations for this assignment include inmate mail processing and performing security during medical clinics on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and other detention officer duties.
