Dare instructorTeaches DARE at numerous schools throughout the county, including in East Helena, Wolf Creek, Augusta, and Lincoln School Districts. This assignment requires at least two years of law enforcement experience.
This position may be called upon to act as a SRO in numerous cases throughout the work week. DARE training is a two week long school and very rewarding. SRO training is an additional week long school hosted by the National Association of School Resource Officers. The SRO is required to teach the DARE curriculum in each school following strict guidelines by DARE America. As a SRO, the school may ask the deputy to touch on other topics besides Drug Awareness. The SRO host a large DARE Camp during the summer for a select few who passed DARE during the 5th Grade. This position also coordinates the Heroes and Helpers Event. Heroes and Helpers is a very large event during the holidays to assist underprivileged families with holiday shopping. |

Heroes and HelpersEach year Heroes and Helpers assist approximately 75 underprivileged families with their holiday shopping. They give each invited child a $50.00 Target gift card and pair them with a local hero to assist them in budgeting their money and completing their purchases. The children will then be directed to Famous Footwear and given $75.00 for the purchase of a new pair of shoes.
Each of the families involved will be directed to Safeway where they will be provided with the food to prepare a traditional Holiday meal including a turkey. The families will then be directed to the Home Depot and given $100.00 for the purchase of Holiday decorating items or any other items their family may be in need of. All funds must be spent by each family during the event. Law Enforcement Officers and other Emergency Personnel will be stationed at each location to assist with purchases. |

Provides law enforcement services to the school, school grounds and areas adjacent to the school. Investigates allegations of criminal incidents per Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures. Enforces state and local laws and ordinances. Will make appropriate referrals to juvenile authorities or other governmental agencies. Establishes and maintains a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide for a safe school environment. Ensures school administrator safety by being present during school searches, which may involve weapons, controlled dangerous substances, or in such cases the student’s emotional state may present a risk to the administrator, staff and students. Develops and teaches classroom curriculum on law-related topics and is visible with the school community. Provides a course of training for school personnel in handling crisis situations which may arise at the school. Attends and participates in school functions. Builds working relationships with the school staff as well with students and parent groups.
