Probationary Deputies work under the general supervision of a Sergeant and perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties and responsibilities.


Who We Are
The Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office is the chief law enforcement agency in Lewis & Clark County, Montana. It is comprised of over eighty employees including sworn officers, detention officers and professional support staff. The Sheriff's Office provides general law enforcement, detention functions, rural fire support and search and rescue operations for the citizens of Lewis & Clark County in a service area of over two million acres. Additionally, this agency provides specialized regional services to the entire county and contract law enforcement to specific areas.

Requirements
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience.

• Graduation from high school​
• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree is preferred. 
• Must successfully complete the Montana Law Enforcement Academy or have been granted reciprocity based on their law enforcement qualifications and experience in another state must successfully complete the Legal Equivalency Basic Course.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry-level deputy position within the rank structure of the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division. Deputies in this position must complete a one-year probationary period. During this probationary period, the deputy has no tenure and may be terminated by the Sheriff with or without cause and without recourse to the Sheriff under the terms of MCA 7-32-2104 and 7-32-2110. Deputies in this class are expected to perform patrol, investigative and crime prevention duties within their assigned areas with a great deal of supervision, and must successfully complete the Field Training Program as approved by the Sheriff.

Examples of Duties

• Conducts both misdemeanor and felony criminal investigations;
• Testifies in court;
• Prepares accurate and timely reports;
• Apprehends and arrests suspects in accordance with Sheriff's Office policy;
• Protects life and property;
• Enforces state criminal and traffic laws;
• Responds to a variety of emergency incidents;
•  Performs other duties as assigned.

Examples of Work-Related Duties

• Performs law enforcement and crime prevention duties and responsibilities;
• Performs vehicle and license checks;
• Responds to calls for assistance, crimes in progress, emergencies and accidents;
• Conducts searches;
• Performs crime scene investigations;
• Administers first aid;
• Assists in evacuations and rescues;
• Documents and reports activities;
• Participates in physical exercises and training's;
• Performs other duties as assigned. 

Employment Standards

• Must be a citizen of the United States;
• Must be at least 18 years of age;
• Must be a graduate of an accredited high school or the equivalent thereof;
• Must be fingerprinted and a search made of local state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record;
• Must not have been convicted of a crime for which the person could have been imprisoned in a state or federal penitentiary;
• Must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation;
• Must be examined by a licensed physician, who is not the applicant's personal physician, appointed by the employing authority to determine if the applicant is free from any mental or physical condition that might adversely affect performance by the applicant of the duties of peace officer;
• Must successfully complete an oral examination conducted by the employing authority to demonstrate the possession of excellent written and verbal communication skills, good temperament, high motivation, and other characteristics necessary to the accomplishment of the duties and functions of a peace officer;
• Must successfully complete the Field Training Officer Program.

• Sheriff's Office policies and procedures, Lewis and Clark County policies and procedures;
• Safety and liability responsibilities;
• Law enforcement practice and procedures;
• Legal and court procedures;

• The care and operation of firearms;
• The geography of Lewis and Clark County.

• Secure information from witnesses and suspects in a calm, professional manner;

• Clearly understand and comprehend verbal and written instructions;
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and the public;
• Meet prescribed standards of physical endurance and agility.

Special Requirements

• Selected applicants are required to meet prescribed standards of physical endurance and agility.
• Must successfully complete the Field Training Officer Program.
• Must successfully complete the Montana Law Enforcement Academy.
• Shifts will be on a rotating schedule.  Rotation occurs every 8 weeks between days, afternoon, and night shifts.
