Probationary Deputies work under the general supervision of a Sergeant and perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties and responsibilities. Who We Are The Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Office is the chief law enforcement agency in Lewis & Clark County, Montana. It is comprised of over eighty employees including sworn officers, detention officers and professional support staff. The Sheriff's Office provides general law enforcement, detention functions, rural fire support and search and rescue operations for the citizens of Lewis & Clark County in a service area of over two million acres. Additionally, this agency provides specialized regional services to the entire county and contract law enforcement to specific areas. Distinguishing Characteristics This is the entry-level deputy position within the rank structure of the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division. Deputies in this position must complete a one-year probationary period. During this probationary period, the deputy has no tenure and may be terminated by the Sheriff with or without cause and without recourse to the Sheriff under the terms of MCA 7-32-2104 and 7-32-2110. Deputies in this class are expected to perform patrol, investigative and crime prevention duties within their assigned areas with a great deal of supervision, and must successfully complete the Field Training Program as approved by the Sheriff.
